Different Types of Hearing Tests for Children and Babies

A hearing test is a good way to evaluate hearing capabilities. These tests are baby-friendly and are meant for their benefit. In this article, we discuss the different kinds of hearing tests for newborn babies, infants and children.

For an infant

Two methods of kids hearing test for newborn babies include:

  • ABR (Auditory brainstem response)

Wires or electrodes are attached to the scalp of the baby with the help of adhesives. While your baby is asleep, its ears are subjected to clicking sounds with the help of tiny earphones. This measures your child’s brain activity and its response to sounds.

  • EOE (Evoked otoacoustic emissions)

Minute flexible plug is placed in your baby's ear. Sound waves are sent into the plug. And, the microphone attached to the plug registers the otoacoustic emissions or reactions of the healthy  ear to the sound. If the baby has hearing loss, there will be no emissions.

For babies

Even for babies who are a few months older than 6 months, ABR and EOE tests are conducted, including Behavioural Audiometry.

  • Behavioural audiometry

This screening test is used to observe the behaviour of your baby in reply to particular sounds. Depending on the results, more tests may be required.

For toddlers

Apart from the above-mentioned screenings, test the additional kids hearing tests include:

  • VRA (Visual Reinforcement Audiometry)

This test trains your child to see the source of the sound. If the kid gives the right response, he is rewarded with the help of visual reinforcement — a flashlight or a moving toy. This test is usually conducted on children of ages 5-months to 11-years.

  • Play audiometry

An electrical device is used to send sound signals at different pitches and volumes into the child’s ears with the help of special earphones. The test is modified slightly and presented in the form of a game according to the age group of the toddler. In this game, the child is urged to do an activity with the toy, such as moving it or touching it, every time he hears a sound.

For older children

  • Tympanometry (impedance audiometry)

This test helps to understand the central ear functions and helps to identify any change in stress in the central ear.

Most children are born healthy. However, it is still good to do a kids hearing test. Visit Hearing Innovations today to book a hearing test for your kid.
